Being a Disciple who Prays Effectively

There are a few basic ways to approach praying to the Father:

First of all there is spontaneous prayer. Spontaneous prayer is speaking to God about whatever comes to mind. In essence, this is trusting that what you are thinking about is what the Lord wants you to pray about and what you need to pray about.

Sometimes we can become “religious” and too premeditated in our praying. Spontaneous prayer is very freeing in that you can pray about anything, or anyone, at any time. When something comes to mind, you pray about it. When someone comes to mind, you pray for them.

Prayer can also be done with a list. This allows you to write down those things that are pressing that you want to return to time and again. This helps you to remember what you want to pray about. There are prayer apps that have been developed that allow you to list various prayers. Some apps will even send you reminders to pray. Because of our busy schedules, this can be helpful.

The Apostle Paul gives us great encouragement to pray when he writes, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think…” (Ephesians 3:20) Notice that God does, “exceedingly abundantly…” Consider those two terms placed together by this wise Apostle. “Exceedingly” means beyond our expectations. To exceed is to excel. Abundantly means something is in a large quantity – more than enough! Together, Paul is letting us know, God will answer in ways that are beyond our expectations in abundant quantity. So keep believing for these types of answers as you continue praying!

Have you ever heard the acronym P.U.S.H.? It means Pray Until Something Happens.

How about this equation, spoken by many a preacher: Much prayer, much power. Little prayer, little power. No prayer, no power. (So keep praying and receiving his power!)

God is already at work to answer our supplications, and loves for us to partner with him by asking for the answers to our prayers.
